If you’re on the internet, you will someday come to the point where you have to deal with trolls.
It’s rarely funny for the person who gets trolled and it often happens people say things they regret later on.

In video games we encounter a different type of trolls. You can easily find bunches of them.
Let’s take a look on how we could outsmart them.

Do not react impulsively! Empathize with the troll to find out what will NOT satisfy him or her.

Ignoring

This should actually be the easiest method. Just don’t pay attention to him, don’t read what he has to say and don’t answer back.
There is this quote: “Don’t feed the troll!”, that’s the most used sentence when a troll appears and that has a reason of course.

It’s recommended to totally stop saying anything in the game because he will probably bombard you with trolling if you speak to others except him. Just because he knows you’re reading the chat box. From the other hand it could be a great way to drive him insane.
This can be fun to do though, if he gets insane, you’re actually winning the battle.
Though, a real troll stays calm and doesn’t give a damn about what others counter attack, the chance you meet a troll like this is rare.

Counter Attack

This is what happens the most to people who aren’t familiar with trolls. They take an insult personally and insult back.
First of all this isn’t the most mature way to react, even disregarding trolls…
It works on newbie trolls though, they could get shocked, but chances are really small since people are enormously big-mouthed on the internet due to they’re anonymous.

Avoid using this technique at any time if you’re trying to win a battle of a troll, it wont work.
It’s only good if you want to rage a bit and get rid of frustrations.

Being a Smart@$$

This is also a very common used method. People who ever dealt with trolls know what to expect.
They know trolls will come with senseless insults, since that’s what makes so many people pissed off! So you can prepare yourself by finding some witty comments already.
Just being logic and calm might help because they will feel stupid, but a real troll will ALWAYS continue, only method 1 will work if used properly.

If you start ignoring after you failed with being a smartass or by using counter attacks, they won…

Also be aware that you could be wrong at any time and will get trolled to infinity -> USE WITH CAUTION!!!

Counter Trolling

Show you’re one of them.
Trolls wont predict this method and maybe you could end up having a good laugh.
The hard thing is to know how to troll properly…

Admitting the insult

If you just admit you’re a “noob” or that you’re “gay” they might stop, especially on the noob part. It just depends on the troll and what insult you’re admitting, if you admit you’re gay they probably troll double as hard obviously.
Probably the least pleasant method to use and also a great risk.

Conclusion

The least natural feeling method, works the best.
You might feel aggrieved when they can insult you without further notice, but you’ve got to see the difference between a troll and an angry player here.

An angry player insults you and means it, it doesn’t really matter whether he gets a response back or not, but if you give him a nasty counter attack a battle might start.
A troll is actually an attention-whore . They’re not necessarily serious about their statements, but just want to see what you’re going to do about it.

Some people don’t seem to pay attention to the ingame mouse sensitivity.
That means you will just have to correct your mouse gestures and also have lots of luck.

Personally the mouse sensitivity is the second most important thing in gaming, just a bit more important is your reaction speed.

High vs Low sensitivity

There are a lot of people that prefer the high sensitivity, but that’s often in other games like Counter Strike. Personally I go with the low sensitivity, like most ET players.

There are the lazy aimers, those just move their wrist because they have such high sensitivity.

But the active aimers with a low sensitivity have to move their entire arm when in close combat, only in distance shooting they use the wrist for extra stability.

Stability

Stability, that’s really important, don’t you know that situation where you aim all around the enemy except on the body? That often happens with fast settings for your mouse. You need to be very trained to handle the high sensitivity, but that doesnot mean you’re more pro if you use either a low or high sensitivity.

Pixel Skipping

Many players think you should play on the maximum dpi of your mouse (that’s the resolution of the sensor), it can help indeed because it’s so precise, but actually it’s only needed if you want to play on a high sensitivity, just to get that crosshair on the spot you want without any pixel skipping.

Pixel skipping, also a thing people don’t see as a harm… You know if your mouse skips when you move the mouse just a little bit and it goes with a jump to that direction.
Your mouse movements should be slow at any moment, because if you’re shooting an enemy that’s really far away, you will not be able to hit him at all times.
It’s just that ET it’s hitboxes are so huge that those skipping mouse players actually hit something.

Windows Sensitivity

If you’ve played on etPro servers, you probably noticed players talking about their sensitivity. Often they also ask: “What is your Windows sensitivity?”
In Windows you can set your mouse speed also, mostly on a scale of 11.
For some reason I really don’t know, ET players think they should mess around with that slider in windows, there are just a few things I have to say about this:

- Why mess with the windows sensitivity if you can just change it ingame to any precise value?
- In other games like Counter Strike players clearly state that changing this slider is pure EVIL.

Don’t touch this slider in Windows! It could make your movement uncorrect.
Just keep what goes in the game, in the game itself.

Adjusting your ingame sensitivity

So now you know about how people think about it, but you still need to find what suites you.
My prediction is that you will end up with a low sensitivity.

It’s very likely you already read the Aiming by Raziel guide.
For the ones who didn’t, I will explain it in short.

Go to an empty server or start one yourself, find a small object or mark in the map that is at headshot level, the height doesn’t really matter, the width should be as small as possible. A good example is a pole a bottle on any table, just make sure it’s not too low or high because we need to find the horizontal sensitivity.

Now start moving left and right around it and keep your aim on the same spot as much as possible.
If you notice your crosshair never really get’s at the correct spot unless you switch movement direction, you should raise your sensitivity.
If your mouse always goes to far ahead, lower it.

Can sound complicated in words, but you’ll feel what fits or not.
Also don’t be afraid to use digits after the separator. So not only 1 2 3 4 5 …, but also 1.1 1.2 1.3 or even 1.12

If you think you found the right sensitivity, try to do a 180 degree turn and turn back to another 180 degrees, do this several times.
If you come in short and didn’t get the full 180, you could consider raising the sensitivity again.

[ad#Google Adsense]

Also try this out (this is a Counter Strike method).
Aim the distance of 3 or more enemies next to the object you just practiced on. Now you will have to hit the object as fast as possible without missing it, I recommend using a pisol so you only fire 1 shot.
It’s called a flickshot. Just pull or push that mouse really fast and click, you will probably have to put tension to your arm muscles to stop at the right place. Adjust your sensitivity again and start all over from the beginning to see if this last setting suits the previous exercises.

My Sensitivity

If you want to know what sensitivity I play with, here’s my story.
I started with 30 on 800 dpi, that’s really fast and a small move will make you spin like a tornado.
Then I changed to 2.6 on the same dpi, real difference and took a while to get used.
Later I got myself a new mouse (MX518) and put it on 1800dpi, I lowered the ingame sensitivity to 0.7 which appeared to be really slow and after a few months I raised it to 1.
I started playing Counter Strike: Source and came out with the sensitivity of 1.1
Now after 5 years of gaming with low sensitivity I returned back to the 2.6 at 800 dpi and it rocks.
I found this sensitivity by the steps I just learned you!

Don’t go for the Numbers

Don’t get influenced by other players! Find your own sensitivity, it all depends on many things:

- Your OS. Windows XP, Vista and 7 all make your mouse speed a little bit different.
- Mouse acceleration (it should be turned of though, but Vista makes that hard)
- The mouse and it’s dpi
- The Frames per Second rate. A low FPS will make your mouse slow and delayed, so get an fps above 80 if possible (I use 125)
- The mouse pad / surface
- So much more…

[ad#Google Adsense]

CONCLUSION

Don’t be lucky! Know where your movement will end.
Make sure you have stability at long range combat.
Avoid pixel skipping.
A high mouse dpi is only important when playing with a fast sensitivity.
Don’t mess with your Windows sensitivity.
Practice your aim when moving/strafing, try flickshots and do some 180 turns.

Adjust your sensitivity until it fits, even if it has digits behind the separator.
Don’t let others influence you, high sensitivity can work as good as low.
Make sure your fps is stable, it can make everything feel slower or faster.
Get rid of any mouse acceleration, seriously…

Don’t get frightened just because it’s a long script. It’s actually as easy as the first 5 lines and from then on everything just gets repeated with minor changes.

We’re creating a toggle that goes both ways here. So we can get 1 step back if we pushed too many times.

1) We bind the Up and Down arrows to launch the vstrs to go either louder or less loud.
2) We link those binds their vstrs to launch a different setting every time we push the button. We make it launch the vstr in the middle of them all, because we want our audio to be neutral when we press a button otherwise you get your ears blown.
3) We finally set the actual vstr settings including the volume, the 2 links to go back or forward and the echo to display how loud your game is.

This script fixes the “bug” the developers made when creating ET (and rtcw) which will have you press F12 to start recording a demo but doesn’t stop when pressing that button again…

This is just a random toggle like we made earlier.
But I’ll explain it again anyways.

1. We set F12 to launch the demotoggle command that we will create at 2nd last line (you can put the line anywhere)

2. Set the demotoggle command we want to run when pressing F12 by making it run the first option in the toggle.

3. Set the first option it’s things that it should do and make sure to let it run the command for the 2nd part of the toggle

4. Do the same as step 3 but let the command go back to the first toggle so it will keep looping if you keep pressing.

Some people will not know what set and seta mean and neither what the difference is between those.

.

Set and seta will actually set (like the word says) a setting (including vstrs) into the database of ET until you stop playing.

.

The difference between seta and set is:
seta writes the setting into your autoexec (standard config) and makes it automaticly load whenever you start ET.

Set will only load that time session you entered it. (Can sometimes stay in autoexec too, but it’s not safe)

.

So why would you use set? Because of the vstr setting.
When using a vstr you need to constantly set another action for it. So in simple words it keeps changing, so there is no need to use a seta that keeps it permanent.
Especially when you quit ET in the middle of a vstr cycle and start again, such seta could mess things up.

You can also cycle through settings like your fov (field of view), sensitivity, volume and so on.

There is no need to use a vstr command for this, it would be way to long and inaccurate.

If we used the vstr command, we would need to write every amount of sensitivity for example. So each line with 1, 2, 3, 4 sensitivity. This can be good enough if you know you want to toggle through just 3 or so settings. Or if you want to change multiple settings with one press of the button, I recommend the vstr over the Cycle.

But instead we can use the /cycle command now.

So let’s say we want to cylce through our sensitivty SMOOTHLY with the left and right arrows.

You’ll need to set the command “cycle” followed by the setting you want to cycle through followed with the start and end amount.

bind LEFTARROW “cycle sensitivity 0.1 30″

bind RIGHTARROW “cycle sensitivity 30 0.1″

So here you see that you can cycle from 0.1 sensitivity to 30.
If you use your scrollwheel to bind these, you could use settings as cg_fov to get a smooth zooming.

NOTE: You can Only use the cycle with commands that use numeric values. So binds etc wont work, while settings with 1 as On and 0 as Off will work.

This is a script type I had been searching for a long time when I was a newbie, it’s used alot in configs, so pay attention!

So imagine we want to create a cycle that will change our name every time we press “H”.

(BEWARE: PunkBuster kicks for too many namechanges!)

We will have to create the bind itself, then we need to set what the bind will do and then we need to set the vstrs of it,

sounds complicated and long, but it is mostly the same.

Also notice you can add as many lines as you want. Try to see the pattern.

bind H “vstr NameCycle”

set NameCycle “vstr name1″ (this line will be changed automaticly every time you press H)

set name1 “name Trooper; set namecycle vstr name2″

set name2 “name Troopa; set namecycle vstr name3″

set name3 “name DTDM_FTW; set namecycle vstr name4″

set name4 “name troopzilla; set namecycle vstr name1″

(the last line redirects to the first line to keep the cycle going on into infinity)

So I set the button in a bind to execute the cycle. Every time we press the button, the cycle will go 1 step ahead.
On the 2nd line we set the vstr we mentioned in the bind on the 1st line. We make this vstr launch the first part of the actual cycle.
On the 3rd line we set the 1st part of the cycle, the one we mentioned on line 2. In this current line we add what the part of the cycle should do, so changing our name and then we add a piece to make the bind ready to do the next part of the cycle when it’s pressed again.
You can keep adding lines, but I recommend using a word with numbers like name1 2 3 … because you keep structure then.
The last line must ALWAYS direct to the first vstr in the cycle, if you named them cleanly it should be the one with number 1 at the end.
